Obeying the Rules Will Never Make You a Better Christian

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12.)

Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence. (Colossians 2:20-23.)

Therefore, … let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. (Hebrews 12:1-2.)

Take your eyes off the rules and keep them on Jesus.

  1. Pastor Bob says:

    – God’s rules?
    – Man’s rules?
    – Man’s interpretations?

The first is a big yes.
The second is important at times.
The least can be a bit problematic, since man is “interpreting” these can be more dangerous then #2.

You are absolutely right, right! We are not “better” but our testimony will remain
    Something we need every day.

  2. The Rev. Anjel Scarborough says:

Amen Tim! Even the Bible has “rules” that do not conform to Jesus. That’s why we need to be in Christian community to discern what conforms to Jesus and what does not. This is not solitary work, it is done with our collective wisdom which is of the Holy Spirit.
