Happy birthday, Mom!
Today would have been my mom’s 86th birthday. Would have been if she hadn’t died from a brain tumor when I was 14. But today makes me smile, because it was a day when she always told the same joke.
You see, today’s Columbus Day (even if we do get Monday off instead) and Mom would always tell us that she landed here in the New World with Columbus. When I was really young, I believed her. What did I know about how long a century or two (or five) really were?
Long Lineage
I actually can trace my family back a ways here in America, and again it’s on my Mom’s side. One of her ancestors was a Huguenot who fled from religious persecution in France , spent a few years in England and then landed on our shores in 1680.
That’s a long time for us to have family here in America, but not so long as in older countries, of course.
Yet I have a lineage that goes back even further.
Eternity Past
I am a child of God, the One who has no beginning and no end. My life is in him, and it is going to last for eternity. And he has intended this since before he made the world.
I may know how long a century is now, but I have trouble grasping the truth of what eternity is like. I’ll tell you this, though. It’s forever.
I’m in a forever family with an eternal Father, the Ancient of Days.
Now that’s a lineage.
Thanks for sharing this, Tim. Sounds like your mom was a fun-loving person. (My husband lost his father to the same type of illness 25+ years ago.) But it is encouraging to be reminded of the forever family that God has made us a part of — all because of His love.
All because of his love – what a blessed thought, Jeannie.
Cute story Tim.
When my son was young, I had a client who did a perfect Pee Wee Herman impression (this was before his, ermlegal problem) and once, he spoke to my son on the phone using it. After that my son was convinced I knew Pee Wee Herman personally, and I was the coolest mom EVER! At least for awhile. 😉
You are one cool mom!
Such a nice way to honor your mother’s memory today, Tim. I love to think of the lineage we have in God. So encouraging!
Thanks, Adriana. It is nice to honor her like this.
Exactly what I was thinking, Adriana.
