When my son was in fifth grade they had to do state reports. The teacher assigned him Hawaii. Happily for us, a friend of ours was getting married on Maui that year as well and had invited our daughter, a third grader, to be a flower girl.
What else could we do? We pulled the kids out of school for a week and a half and went. If only we’d known about this song we could have been even better prepared for the trip.
I did make up a little song back then to help our son remember how to pronounce the name of the Hawaiian state fish. Well, maybe it was really to help me remember how to pronounce it. But it worked because I remember to this day.

We are planning a trip to Hawaii in January: this is PERFECT!!!
I wish I was going to Hawaii! At least the alphabet would be easy for us Finns, as the vowels are pronounced just like in Finnish. I’d be able to read Hawaiian fluently – without understanding a word I say…. 🙂
