Rachel Held Evans made it to Yahoo News on Thursday. The short description of her new book is polite, but the photos in the slide show are a hoot!
P.S. That praising at the city gate thing would freak me out too. Check out item 6 here.

Thanks for the links. I read A. J. Jacobs book, The Year of Living Biblically and this one looks better for some reason. Maybe it is a story better told by a Christian woman. (We are allowed to make fun of ourselves, right? A.J. — Nah. No thanks.)
I’ll confess that I haven’t read either book (Jacobs’s or Evans’s), and I never even heard of Jacobs until after I read a number of the articles about Evans’s book. SO now the secret is out: sometimes stuff I don’t know anything about still gives me something to talk about!
p.s. I DO like A.J. Jacob’s book, The Know It All: One Man’s Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World. Everything he has written after that has seemed kind of forced.
Wait a sec … is that the book about the guy who read the encyclopedia? If so, then I guess I have heard of A.J .Jacobs before because I heard them talk about that one on NPR once.
Yep. It was the Encyclopaedia Britannica. His book was funny and sincere. I felt like I could relate to it though my life experience was vastly different from his. You would think that I could better relate to The Year of Living Biblically, since I’m a Christian, but no. He was out of his sphere and it showed.
Loved this; thanks for sharing. The pictures ARE great — I like her plucky smile! As for the city gates part, thankfully verse 31 allows the Biblical woman to get her own back in the end: praise in the gates and a well-earned reward to boot.
Sadly, the yahoo link seems to prove my husband’s & my theory that it only takes 2-3 comments on most online blogs, postings, etc. before the comments turn nasty and vulgar. What a shame! Fortunately, however, that is not true on this blog: you have to get past at least ten before they start to turn hatey. Just kidding 😉 — glad to see there’s none of that here.
Hatahs hate, but we love them all the same!
This book sounds quite funny.
And she’s on the Today Show today! (I, uh, got an advance copy of Rachel’s book. I LOVED it. I’m not allowed to post on it till the 29th but I’ll definitely be saying something about it on my blog then.)
Also on AJ Jacobs: I’ve never read The Year of Living Biblically, but I loved The Know It All!
Then I’m looking forward to the 29th!
Biblical womanhood, hmmm? Okay. Like Deborah, perhaps, who was tough as tenpenny nails from what I can find out about her in the Bible. Or Jael, the wife of Heber? Get an enemy general all sleepy after lunch and hammer a tent stake through his head.
Do NOT mess with Biblical women.
As for the correct way to observe most Jewish holidays, I’ve heard it boiled down to this simple formula: “They tried to kill us, we won, let’s eat.”
Trying to emulate my Biblical sisters (within reason!)

Love the holiday formula, MA!
